Theatre L'Acadie's In Bloom Series presents The Kings Are Dead by Curtis Lawrence, with Direction by David Adams and Dramaturgy by Doris Davenport.
About the Play: The Kings Are Dead pulses with life inside JT's, a Black gay bar on the South Side of Chicago in 1997. Through the eyes of five people, we witness a community grappling with identity, legacy, and love. The tight-knit family at JT's must confront their shared past and uncertain future. What unfolds is an intimate portrait of chosen family, the weight of history, and the power of spaces that provide refuge, affirmation, and the freedom to be one's true self.

About In Bloom: How do you get people to talk about the ugly? As nurturers of new and under-produced works, Theatre L’acadie is driven to unearth the beauty rooted within chaos. The In Bloom series aims to highlight early-career BIPOC, LGBTQ+, & non-binary artists through intentional script selection, casting, and direction. Each play is carried through a workshop rehearsal process, aided by a dramaturg, culminating in a final reading where playwrights get the chance to hear audience feedback, and bring their work to the broader Chicago Theatre community.
